Spain crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating Argentina

Spain claimed the 2026 FIFA World Cup title after super sub Ferran Torres fired Spain to their second men’s World Cup in a dramatic 1-0 victory over Argentina in a thrilling final that captivated football fans around the world.

Both sides entered the match in outstanding form, having produced impressive performances throughout the tournament with Argentina chasing yet another World Cup crown.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal early in the second period of extra time as Spain dominated the match from start to finish. Argentina struggled throughout the final, failing to register a single shot in 120 minutes.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a string of outstanding saves to keep the defending champions in the contest, including denying Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Nico Williams on several occasions.

Argentina’s hopes suffered another setback when Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card just before the end of normal time.

Spain continued to pile on the pressure in extra time before Nico Williams headed the ball into the path of Torres, who fired home the winner.

Argentina were unable to produce a late response, with Lionel Scaloni’s side looking a shadow of the team that had reached the final.

The defeat also appeared to mark the end of Lionel Messi’s World Cup career, with the 39-year-old left in tears after collecting his runners-up medal.

Spain celebrated a historic victory at MetLife Stadium, while tempers flared after the final whistle as players from both teams became involved in heated exchanges.

The victory completed an unforgettable campaign for Spain, built on technical brilliance, teamwork and resilience. Although Argentina’s dream of lifting the trophy again came to an end, they earned admiration for another outstanding World Cup run, battling through a difficult knockout stage before falling by the narrowest of margins in a memorable final.

Spain’s triumph will be remembered as one of the defining moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
