OAS welcomes Kenya’s proposed leading role in Haiti

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) has welcomed Kenya’s willingness to play a leading role in Haiti, saying that it continues to closely monitor the situation in the French-speaking Caribbean country and “the aspects derived from it.

In this regard, the General Secretariat welcomes with appreciation the announcement by the Government of Kenya to play a leading role in a multinational force that contributes to Haiti’s security needs,” said the Washington, D.C.-headquartered OAS in a statement.

“The General Secretariat reiterates its solidarity with the Haitian people and reiterates its willingness to continue working together with the Haitian counterparts, with the OAS member states, with CARICOM (Caribbean Community) and with the OAS Working Group on Haiti to bring solutions in terms of democracy, human rights, security and comprehensive development of the Haitian nation,” it added.

The Bahamas Government on Wednesday said it was committed to sending 150 officers to support a multi-national force in Haiti as the CARICOM country welcomed a Kenyan-led police mission.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that The Bahamas would send personnel to Haiti as part of the multi-national force “once authorized by the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

“We now urge the passing of a UN Security Council Resolution in support of this force,” the statement said.
