Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed the appointment of Nicholas Pooran as West Indies One-Day International (ODI) and T20 captain following the retirement of Kieron Pollard last month.
Pooran, 26, will take over the captaincy for the West Indies ODI and T20 teams, after being Pollard’s deputy over the last year.
The appointment will include the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022 and the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023.
Hope has been recommended to stand as his deputy of the ODI Team.
Pooran has already captained the West Indies Men in Pollard’s absence, leading them to win the CG Insurance T20 series at home against Australia in 2021.
The left-handed wicketkeeper batsman has scored eight half centuries and an ODI century to his name.
He also scored eight T20 half centuries for West Indies Senior Men’s team.
He first burst onto the cricket scene representing the West Indies Under-19 team at the 2014 World Cup smashing 302 runs from six matches.

CWI President Ricky Skerritt congratulated Pooran on his appointment saying Nicholas Pooran is a specially gifted cricketer and the right person to take over the white-ball captaincy.

“We are confident that he will continue to climb the leadership curve speedily, and successfully. I appeal to all stakeholders to give Nicholas the support and encouragement he deserves,” he said.
Commenting on his elevation to the captaincy, Pooran said he feels honored to be handed control of the of the limited overs teams.
