Jamaica, Cuba pick up big wins at CWU17

The teams from Group F and Group H were back in action at the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, with Cuba, Jamaica, Canada and El Salvador all posting wins.

In Group F at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, Jamaica used a strong finish to pull away from host nation Dominican Republic, 3-1, according to CONCACAF.

“The home side jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 3’ through Maria Torreira, but the Reggae Girlz would pull level in the 30’, thanks to a goal from Tiny Seaton,” CONCACAF said.

“Things stayed tight going into the second half, but in the final 20 minutes, Jamaica would pull away,” it added. “Dannique Wilson scored the go-ahead goal in the 70’, and, then, Natoya Atkinson added an insurance goal in the 90+1’ to round out the 3-1 score line.”

The other game in Group F saw Canada down Bermuda 5-0, CONCACAF.

It said Rosa Maalouf pulled level with Amalia Villarreal of the United States for the scoring lead in the CWU17 (6 goals) with a pair of scores (70’, 86’), while Clare Logan (15’), Jade Bordeleau (39’) and Anna Hauer (43’) also found the back of the net.

With the results from the day, CONCACAF said both Jamaica and Canada have clinched berths in the knockout round.

CONCACAF said Group H continued at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, where Cuba got goals on each side of halftime to defeat Guatemala, 2-0, for the Caribbean island’s first ever CWU17 victory.

Ainachy Montalvo scored right before the break in the 45+1 to give Cuba a 1-0 lead, before Dalia Ledesma doubled the advantage just two minutes after the re-start in the 47’, CONCACAF said.

It said El Salvador are also on their way to the next round by virtue of their 2-0 win against Haiti.

CONCACAF said Anika Berger broke the deadlock in the 27’ and was joined on the scoresheet by Mia Arevalo in the 59’ to deliver the three points to the Cuscatlecas.
