Guyana’s 56th Independence flag raising ceremonies to be held in New York, New Jersey

Queens Borough President, Donovan Richards Jr. will join the Consulate of Guyana New York, at a cocktail reception and cultural presentation to commemorate the Republic’s 56th Independence Anniversary, on May 26, the day the country became free from British rule.

The observance, a free admission event, will be held at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, (JPAC), 153-10 Jamaica Ave., Queens, and will be attended by several Guyanese elected officials and special guests.

Some of the sponsors include Dave’s West Indian Products Corp., The Caribbean NYS Hit Caribbean Station, Kaieteur Restaurant, Western Union, Gehi & Associates Attorneys at Law, GraceKennedy Money Services and Hibiscus Restaurant & Bar.

The Mayor of the City of Newark, Ras J. Baraka, will also join Guyanese in celebrating the nation’s 56th Independence. The Friday, May 26, celebration will begin at 6:00 p.m., and end at 8:00 p.m.

Notable dignitaries, and Guyanese from Newark and surrounding areas, will be in attendance, as several nationals are honored for their outstanding contributions to the diaspora.

According to Alyssa B. King, chair of the Flag Raising Committee, a showcase of Guyanese food, music, and culture, will be highlights of the event being organized by The Office of the Mayor, The Office of International Relations and Diaspora Affairs, The Caribbean Commission, and the Guyana Flag Raising Committee.

Additionally, Mayor Ted R. Green, the mayor of East Orange, Assemblywoman, Britnee N. Timberlake representing the 34th Legislative District, East Orange City Council Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs in conjunction with president and founder of the Guyana America Heritage Foundation, Lady Ira Lewis will host Guyana’s 56th Anniversary of Independence on June 10, at 44 City Hall Plaza East Orange, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

A VIP meet and greet from 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., will proceed the celebration of music, dance, and poetry.

The mayor’s office said it has been “our tradition to celebrate the Guyana National Flag Day honoring the colors of which our freedom is encapsulated.

“June of each year is officially designated to commemorate such an event. This is to give respect and reverence to our symbol of national sovereignty and solidarity.”

“The Guyanese flag is the embodiment of all our country’s ideals, culture, and tradition,” said Mayor Green.

The commemoration will also recognize several outstanding Guyanese as well as other nationals who have made an impact in the society.
