Guyana launches Diamond Jubilee with Homecoming celebrations

Under the theme: “The Homecoming – Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee,” the Government of Guyana will kick off its 60th Year of Independence in May 2026 with a cultural showcase, a massive homecoming event, and a “vibrant calendar of activities” throughout the year.
The Republic that attained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966, focuses on reconnecting Guyanese at home and in the diaspora.
The activities will include a grand homecoming, with targeted efforts to bring the diaspora back to celebrate. They will also feature a traditional flag-raising ceremony, religious observances, cultural showcases, and a Guyana Carnival that highlights Guyana’s multicultural heritage.
Additionally, events throughout the week will highlight local cuisine, heritage tours, and the creative industries (Orange Economy). The Guyana Gold Board will produce a special gold medallion to mark the milestone during the celebration.
“This medallion, issued in recognition of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee, will stand as a symbol of national pride, paying homage to Guyana’s rich mining legacy, an industry that has been integral to the country’s economic and social development for more than 150 years and which continues to play a vital role in shaping our nation’s transformation,” the ministry noted in a statement.
In a statement to Caribbean Life, Consul General to New York, Michael E. Brotherson said, “In consonance with the major events that will be held at home in Guyana, the Consulate and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York will host a series of activities in New York, in observance of the Jubilee Anniversary.
CG Brotherson noted that these events will bring together Guyanese nationals, members of the diplomatic corps, friends of Guyana, elected officials, and the wider public. The goal is to salute Guyana’s Independence and highlight its development over the years.
On Monday, May 25, and Tuesday, May 26, 2026, starting at noon, an Aerial Flyover will display a giant Golden Arrowhead National Flag of Guyana. The flag will be flown across key areas of New York City, including Lido Beach, Coney Island Beach, Hudson River (New York side), George Washington Bridge, Battery Park, New Jersey, Liberty Park, and Brooklyn.
On Tuesday, May 26, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the consulate will host a flag raising and reception. It will be held in the Helen Marshall Culture Center at Queens Borough Hall, 120-55 Queens Blvd., Kew Gardens.
The flyover with the large Golden Arrowhead Flag will once again, on May 26, bring pride to the large Guyanese Diaspora in New York and nearby areas.
“It is intended as a unifying moment for nationals abroad, a tribute to their resilience, and a visual reminder of the nation’s enduring journey since achieving independence in 1966,” said Ambassador Brotherson.
The diplomat encouraged the public to attend events. He also suggested viewing the flyover at parks, waterfronts, or open areas along the flight path.
CG Brotherson added that he will provide further updates in the weeks ahead.
