Guyana gov’t to further strengthen diaspora relationship
“The important work of diplomatic and consular outreach remains an important tool of interpersonal connection between a government, its citizens abroad and the wider global community, were the words expressed by newly appointed Guyana Consular General of Guyana to New York, Ambassador Michael E. Brotherson, during a Meet and Greet reception, at the Consulate in Manhattan, recently.
“One of the most important roles we will undertake is the further strengthening relationship with our Diaspora. This government is mindful of the contributions of the Diaspora to development and is deeply committed to enhancing this relationship.”
Ambassador Brotherson, who took up office on July 1 of this year, after extending warm greetings and well wishes on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hugh Todd, and President Irfaan Ali, told compatriots that New York is one of the most critical communities which “our international work is focused.”
He said the skills, expertise, and resources the Diaspora possess are greatly valued, and can have a lasting impact as Guyana develops. “It is important that nationals be the ones to lead this drive forward,” adding that the metropolis is home to hundreds of thousands of nationals, who have built careers and prosperous lives.
“I am privileged to have been given the responsibilities to represent the interest of Guyanese. I also have the important duty of working on behalf of the government to create partnerships that will provide opportunities for Guyanese businesses, generate critical investment across every sector of Guyana, facilitate philanthropy, and strengthen the relationship between our two countries,” said Brotherson.
Amb. Brotherson, a career diplomat with 20 years of service under his belt, assured that the homeland is on the cusp of transformational change, adding, “the economy is seeing unprecedented growth, and it is the duty and focus of President Ali’s administration to ensure that this is leveraged for the benefit of the people.”
He told the room filled with diplomats, alumni, elected officials, Guyanese professionals, and consul staff, that the administration has taken significant steps, dedicating large expenditure that have improved infrastructure, and enhanced service delivery to communities across the Republic.
“We have expanded our diplomatic footprint, opening new missions, and have strengthened our existing embassies and consulates. These investments will ensure that Guyana is able to play an active role in representing the interests of our people on all the issues that are dominating the international political agendas,” he said.
He reiterated that the government is committed to pursuing prosperity for all nationals. “We remain fully and enthusiastically engaged in the task of building an enduring bond with our diaspora, here in New York and across the United States,” Brotherson reassured nationals, before thanking Aneesha Allie, consul, for her kind introduction.
Guyana’s Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, calling Brotherson a friend, said the consul general has had a professional career. He is a diplomat who served in many countries. “You have someone at your disposal for a long time. He is a person who will listen to you, and be accessible to you. This is what you call service,” said Nadir.
NY State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar (AD38) said she has already begun plans to work with CG Brotherson to empower her community. “My office is your office. I am so looking forward to working with you. Liberty Avenue in my district, is filled with Guyanese businesses and it is my mission to empower them. Welcome,” said Rajkumar.
Congratulating Ambassador Brotherson, on his appointment, NYS Senator Jabari Brisport, Brooklyn (SD 25) recalled how his father grew up in a small village in Guyana without indoor plumbing yet raised a son to become a Senator. “It is an honor being my ancestors’ wildest dream. It is an honor to be at a celebration like this, that brings people together. Collaboration, and communication, makes us stronger,” he said.
Council General of Dominica to New York, Sheldon Peter Anthony, welcomed Amb. Brotherson stating that the post as CG may be challenging at times but one that will overcome obstacles, before extending a helping hand on behalf of the CARICOM consular corps.
Fazal “Joe” Yussuff, advisor on Investment & Diaspora Affairs, in closing remarks welcomed Guyanese, and CG Brotherson, noting that he was confident the diaspora would not be disappointed. He complimented the diplomat on his efficiency, assuring that the services being offered at the consulate will be satisfactory.
