Global Peace Index ranks Jamaica as most peaceful country in the Caribbean

The island of Jamaica, known for its strength in human resources and natural beauty, has landed the top spot in the region in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI).
The island ranked 70th out of 163 countries worldwide and third in North America and Central America, reflecting continued improvement in safety and stability.
The annual Global Peace Index, produced by the Institute of Economic & Peace, measures peacefulness using indicators such as levels of societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarization. The report is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading assessments of peace and stability.
The recognition is expected to provide a boost to Jamaica’s tourism industry, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination for international visitors.
Travel experts note that the ranking compliments Jamaica’s global appeal for its beaches, culture, music, and hospitality.
The Global Peace Index found that while global peacefulness continues to face significant challenges, Jamaica stood out as the Caribbean’s highest-ranked nation, underscoring its progress in fostering a more secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
During his sectoral debate to Parliament last week, Dr. Horace Chang, Minister of National Security in Jamaica, acknowledged the announcement and noted that “…this has placed Jamaica on a course to record one of the safest years in modern history.”
The top slots on the IEP indicators were dominated by European countries. Iceland again claimed the first spot for the 19th consecutive year. That was followed by New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Ireland.
