Four Guyanese selected for Chevening Scholar program in the UK

British High Commissioner at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Guyana, Jane Miller, on the 40th anniversary of the distinguished Chevening Scholar program, congratulated, and bid farewell to the 2023 Guyanese recipients who will begin their academic journey in the United Kingdom, this fall.

In a Facebook post, Ambassador Jane Miller expressed what a wonderful evening it was to celebrate 40 years of Chevening, during a reception at the British High Commission Georgetown. She said the evening celebrated some of Guyana’s amazing alumni, as she bade farewell to four new scholars “who are on their way to the UK. We wish Keisha Edwards, Deanna Walcott, Joshua Floyd Benn and Amrita Naraine, every success.”

According to the Department of Public Information (DPI), the special highlights of the event were the insightful words shared by two distinguished guests — Dr. Ashni Singh, senior minister within the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, and Charles Ramson, minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. They are both proud Chevening alumni, “exemplifying the incredible opportunities this program offers.”

“We once again extend our heartfelt congratulations to the 2023 Chevening scholars and wish them success in their academic pursuits,” said the diplomat.

Chevening is the UK government’s global awards program, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations established in 1983.

Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year masters degrees in the UK. While there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, the program looks for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

“Because these scholarships are fully funded (flights, accommodation, and course fees are all included), you are free to focus on achieving your professional goals and maximizing the experience of a lifetime,” states the website.

“You will live and study in the UK for a year, during which time you will develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. On completing your studies, you will leave the UK equipped with the knowledge and networks necessary to bring your own ideas to life,” according to website, https://www.chevening.org/scholarships/.
