โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™ turns 22

On any given night, somewhere in the world, Mr. Easyโ€™s global hit โ€œDrive Me Crazyโ€ is playing.

โ€œFrom arenas to TV and film placements and celebrity love, โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™ โ€“ 22 years later โ€“ helps define the Dancehall sound the masses love,โ€ Caribbean entertainment publicist Flair Lindsey, of Acclaim PR, told Caribbean Life over the weekend.

Produced by Tony โ€œCDโ€ Kelly on the infectious โ€œBuy Out Riddim,โ€ โ€œDrive Me Crazyโ€ captures the essence of Dancehallโ€™s golden era, Lindsey said.

โ€œAs Mr. Easyโ€™s extraordinary vocals adorn the pulsating riddim, โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™ commands listeners, inspiring crowds to groove fearlessly or sing verbatim,โ€ she said.

โ€œI knew that there was something special about โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™ when I recorded it,โ€ Mr. Easy said. โ€œYet, and still, I am humbled by the heights the record has reached.โ€

While celebrating the 22nd Anniversary of โ€œDrive Me Crazy,โ€ Lindsey said Mr. Easy secured its placement in the acclaimed drama series, โ€œGrime Kids,โ€ now on BBC Three.

She said the remarkable series channels the โ€œcoming of age journey of five Black London teenagers, navigating inner city living, societal woes, racism and more to make it in Grime music.

โ€œSet in the late 90s, the group helps take an underground phenomenon to worldwide status,โ€ Lindsey said.

โ€œThis is a big achievement for me,โ€ Mr. Easy said. โ€œThe longevity of โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™ is a true testament that good music has no expiration and that Dancehall has a viable place in todayโ€™s music landscape.

โ€œI am proud of the song and canโ€™t think of a more rewarding TV placement than โ€˜Grime Kids,โ€™โ€ he added, disclosing that he is taking the celebration on the road, with summer shows planned for New York, Maryland, Virginia, D.C. and Oklahoma, and more to be announced.

From a slew of classics to his new banger โ€œDirty Dancer,โ€ produced by DJ Baby Bang, โ€œMr. Easy proves timeless appeal and a knack for rocking every stage show,โ€ Lindsey said.

โ€œMr. Easyโ€™s pen game matches his stellar vocals,โ€ she said. โ€œThe โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™ effect is massive.โ€

Lindsey said TV is not the only place the hit song is buzzing.

โ€œIn a viral video, NBA star Russell Westbrook of the LA Clippers is seen dancing and singing the Dancehall classic word for word, right down to the ad libs,โ€ she said.

โ€œLong live โ€˜Drive Me Crazy,โ€™โ€ Mr. Easy said. โ€œHereโ€™s to 22 more years of the classic. โ€œGrateful for Russell Westbrook and all fans, DJs, fellow artists and influencers, who have supported the song.โ€

Lindsey said Mr. Easy is one of Dancehallโ€™s signature voices, with staples on every DJโ€™s playlist.

โ€œWhether itโ€™s โ€˜Drive Me Crazyโ€™, โ€˜Rain Againโ€™, โ€˜Murderโ€™, โ€˜Bashment Timeโ€™, โ€˜Silent Killerโ€™, โ€˜Strangest Thingโ€™ or one of the croonerโ€™s many other classics, Mr. Easy leaves an indelible mark on Reggae and Dancehall music and culture,โ€ she said.
