Canada seals World Cup spot after downing Jamaica

CONCACAF says Canada has qualified for its first FIFA World Cup since Mexico 1986 after downing Jamaica 4-0 on matchday 13 Sunday of the Third Round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022 at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Thanks to goals from Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan, Junior Hoilett and a Jamaica own goal, “Canada will have a place on international football’s biggest stage for the first time in 36 years,” CONCACAF said.

“Canada could not have asked for a better start, as Larin latched onto a pass from Stephen Eustaquio and finished past Jamaica GK Andre Blake to make it a 1-0 home lead in the 13,” CONCACAF said.

It said it was Larin’s sixth goal of the Final Round and his 13th overall in WCQ for Qatar 2022.

“Jamaica looked to respond and it took Canada GK Milan Borjan getting low to prevent Daniel Green from equalizing in the 32,” CONCACAF said. “But the momentum was mostly with Canada, and Larin almost notched his second of the day in the 39’ with a right-footed shot from inside the area and that flashed wide.

“Canada kept knocking on the door, and they would double the advantage to 2-0 in the 44’ when a cross found the feet of Buchanan, who controlled and finished from a few yards out,” it added.

CONCACAF said the home side wanted more and continued to push for another score in the second half, with Hoilett increasing the lead to 3-0 in the 82’ with a finish inside the area.

“The day would then be completed by a Jamaica own goal in the 88’, capping the 4-0 scoreline and setting off the celebration in Toronto,” CONCACAF said.
