Calvary’s Mission 15th fundraiser gala towards fighting food insecurity

Calvary’s Mission Food Pantry in Richmond Hill, Queens, headed by Guyanese American entrepreneur, Tony Singh, continues to be at the forefront of food insecurity, serving scores of residents with balanced diet to fight hunger, on the rise in New York, since migrants from Latin America have flooded the boroughs.

Last Saturday, the 102-16 89th Ave., pantry, opened at 9:00 a.m., to a surge of families carrying shopping carts, many with their offspring strapped to their backs, waiting to take home staple food items to combat the hunger crisis.

With more than 400,000 children in New York City facing hunger, or about one in four, according to Mayor Eric Adams, who honored hunger heroes at a No Kid Hungry New York benefit, it is heartening that Singh, who has been running the pantry for more than 20 years, is in the fight to bring these numbers down.

Mayor Adams said, “One in four children in our city might experience hunger this year, and that’s why it’s so important that our ‘Hunger Heroes’ are helping to combat hunger across our city on a daily basis. One such is Singh, who, no matter the weather condition, arrives at the pantry 5 a.m. every Saturday.”

The counter machine recorded 1,211 needy persons who passed through the pantry on March 18 taking with them pasta, peanut butter, carrots, potatoes, chicken, fruits, nuts, and loads of other items to ensure they do not go hungry.

With the assistance of faithful volunteers, Roger Gary, Kevin Sookdeo — managing director, Kurt Hall, Lennox Verwayne, and many others who make the commitment feeding the less fortunate, the pantry has become one of the largest in the area.

Sookdeo, spoke of the catastrophe of food insecurity that is impacting the community, and the pantry’s efforts to combat the plight, while thanking volunteers for their service.

And towards its massive drive, to keep food on the tables of families, Singh announced that the pantry will host its 15th Annual Fundraiser and Dinner on May 19, at Terrace on The Park, 53-11 111 St. in Queens.

He called on all to join in the effort to end food insecurity, while being a part of the community helping to raise funds for a worthy cause.
