Biden hails Guyana’s 56th anniversary of independence

The Joe Biden administration in the United States on Thursday congratulated the people of Guyana on their 56th anniversary of independence, saying that it values the “close partnership” between both countries.

In a brief statement, US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said Washington and Georgetown have “partnered on health security to provide hundreds of thousands of vaccines to the Guyanese people to fight COVID-19.

“We continue to develop a robust bilateral trade relationship, focusing on high standards and transparency,” Blinken said. “We look forward to collaborating with Guyana on energy and food security, and strengthening our broad ties going forward.

“As you mark this cheerful occasion, we join you in celebrating your Independence Day,” he added.

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, also congratulated the government and people of Guyana on their independence anniversary.

An original signatory to the Treaty of Chaguaramas, Dr. Barnett noted that Guyana also serves as host country to the headquarters of the Caribbean Community Secretariat, “an indication of its long-standing and firm commitment to regional integration.”

Dr. Barnett told Guyana’s President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali that, as the Head of Government with responsibility for Agriculture and Food Security in the Community’s Quasi-Cabinet, his leadership has “propelled the sector into an exciting new era.

“The successful recent Agri-Investment Forum and Expo in Guyana is just one example of the dynamism injected into the sector,” said Dr. Barnett, adding that “the Caribbean Community reiterates its support to the government and people of Guyana, and joins in celebrating this auspicious occasion.”
