All ages, all seasons: Volleyball teams unite Caribbean players in Queens

For over a decade, the Morant and Berbice volleyball teams have been uniting players of all ages and backgrounds from various Caribbean nations, fostering community and camaraderie at Valley Stream State Park.

Since 2010, these teams, led by 32-year-old Arwin Bridgelal of Guyana, have offered a space for competitive and recreational play. Formed by members of the local Queens community and beyond, the teams are open to anyone with a passion for the sport.

The Morant team, named after the Port Morant area in Berbice, Guyana, started with a group of local kids playing together. “It began with a guy named Joe, and as the younger players moved on to school, the older community members stepped in,” Bridgelal explained. Over the years, the team has grown to include players between 15 and 68, with participants joining from countries such as India and the Dominican Republic.

The teams field anywhere from five to 25 players, depending on attendance. While some members pursue the sport competitively in various leagues, the emphasis remains on fun and community engagement. “We play for fun, but some of these guys are professional players,” Bridgelal said. Former professional player David, who represented Guyana, added, “It keeps you away from activities that aren’t worth it. It helps you focus mentally and physically, all while enjoying time with friends.”

The teams play every Sunday, rain or shine—even in winter. “If it’s above 40 degrees, we’re here,” Bridgelal said. “We’ve played with snow on the ground and leaves on the court. We always find a way to keep the game going.”

The teams gather for family gatherings on significant holidays, often incorporating barbecues alongside their volleyball matches. They also compete in beach volleyball competitions during the summer while maintaining unity on the grass courts. Bridgelal expressed hopes of advancing the teams’ skills and competing at higher levels. “We want to build the team so we can play more professionally,” he said.

Valley Stream State Park welcomes anyone interested in joining the Morant and Berbice volleyball community. Newcomers are encouraged to learn the game and participate in the vibrant, inclusive atmosphere. The teams provide an ideal setting for anyone who enjoys the sport while connecting with others.
