Ahye happy with Sprint Double in outdoor campaign opener

Michelle-Lee Ahye was happy to be back on the track as she got her outdoor campaign off with a sprint double at the National Association of Athletic Administration (NAAA) Track and Field Series 3 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, in Port-of-Spain.

“Just getting my legs rolling for my international schedule in May. Today was pretty good. My body feels good, my mental is good. Just came out here to get the rust off,” said Ahye.

She first captured the women’s 100 metres in 11.47 seconds, ahead of teenager Symphony Patrick of Concorde with 11.99. Another teenager Sierra Joseph (Simplex) was third, 12.09.

The triple national record-holder (60m, 100m, 200m) dominated the 200m with 23.53. Patrick was second in 24.25 with Angel Cumberbatch (Stallion) third in 25.27. Patrick’s time was quicker than the 2024 World Under-20 Championships qualifying standard of 24.35.

Ahye, the 2018 Commonwealth Games women’s 100m winner said she has been training at home for the last 12 months.

“Last year was tough for me so working out at home has been comforting and relaxing. With the training at home ‘things’ could happen this year. I have a new coach, new environment,” she said.

Ahye was one of two double winners at the meet as Kernesha Shelbourne (Oasics) and Samantha Shukla (Unattached) also took home two titles.
