Georgetown mayor re-elected to serve a third term

Mayor of Georgetown, Guyana, Councillor Ubraj Narine, who had paid a visit to New York City Mayor, Bill DeBlasio at Gracie Mansion, in New York City, was on Dec. 7 re-elected unopposed to serve in 2021.

Mayor Narine, a practicing Pandit who was invited in September 2019 to meet with the elected official to forge ties between the two cities during a whirlwind tour of America, will be serving his third year with incumbent, Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentor, both who were nominated by the previous APNU Coalition government, and recently, by APNU Councillors, Gregory Fraser and Clayton Hinds.

Via a Facebook post, Mayor Narine, who also serves as a justice of the peace, in expressing his gratitude said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the councillors who supported me in my bid for re-election as Mayor of the Georgetown and City Council.

“I am grateful to you for your support and humbled by your continued confidence in me to lead the Council. You’ve all helped me to do the best I can for the people of Georgetown,” he said.

Adding, “I look forward to next year, working hard to make Georgetown better. I truly appreciate your faith in my leadership and I will do the best I can for our beloved city. Thank you.”

After his sit-down meeting with Mayor DeBlasio, he said they discussed climate change and its effects on the cities of Georgetown and New York, mental health awareness, waste management and best practices, training opportunities for Georgetown municipal staff, and forged a partnership to develop Guyana’s garden city.

Narine, the youngest mayor in the region, during his visit, also met with New York City Commissioner for International Affairs, Penny Abeywardena and Leslie Slocum, and had agreed to submit a draft work program for cooperation between the cities of Georgetown and New York, to be sent to Mayor Blasio, who promised to work with him on all possible initiatives.
