Injured ex-Windward Islands cricketer needs help

Cricket West Indies said on March 26 that the cricket family of Dominica has thrown its full support behind Tyrone Theophile, the former Dominica captain and Windward Islands batsman, who is in need of urgent financial support following an accident last year.

Cricket West Indies said the hard-hitting opener received severe injuries, adding that the funds raised will go towards a second surgery.

Liam Sebastien, also a former Dominica and Windwards player, was part of an organizing committee of activities on March 28 at the Windsor Park in Roseau, the Dominica capital, Cricket West Indies said.

As part of the efforts, it said there was a celebrity match featuring several local government and opposition officials, and present and former players.

There was also a double-wicket competition and a six-hitting competition.

“Tyrone was a very good cricketer for Dominica and the Windward Islands, and he also played for the West Indies President’s XI,” Sebastien said. “So, he made a wonderful contribution to the game.

“Now, in his time of need, we would love persons to assist, and we urge everyone who can to make a contribution to help,” he added. “We are trying to raise funds to get him back to as close as where he was before.

“It’s a major undertaking; it’s not easy,” Sebastien continued. “But we all have to lend a helping hand.”

According to Cricket West Indies, the 31-year-old Theophile made his debut for the Windward Islands against Jamaica in January 2010.

In his 68 first-class matches, he scored 3,055 runs, including three centuries, including a top score of 160, Cricket West Indies said.
