69th Precinct Community Council welcomes older adults to 2nd Annual Valentine’s appreciation dinner

The Community Council of the 69th Precinct in Brooklyn, last Saturday, welcomed a large turnout of elegantly dressed residents of Canarsie to its 2nd Annual Older Adults Valentine’s Day Appreciation Dinner, filled with excitement, in the Holy Family Church Auditorium, despite the cold rainy afternoon.

The evening of music, dancing, and servings of Caribbean cuisine brought together members of the NYPD, the youth explorers, and elected officials, all who showed their appreciation for the seniors.

One such lawmaker, was House Minority Leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries who applauded the community council, the NYPD, and their leadership, before acknowledging his colleagues, Senator Roxanne Persaud, of the 19th Senate District and Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, District 46.

Jeffries who spoke of his hectic congressional travels nationally and internationally, noting the hard work that must be done to make sure that, “we do what is necessary to continue to put people over politics,” added that the government will lower cost, build a healthy economy, and stand up for older Americans and “our amazing seniors.”

“We all stand on your shoulders. I was in Washington DC representing all of you a few days ago for the State of the Union. President Biden did his thing and we’re all going to have to work hard to make sure that we can continue to move this country in the right direction, and not allow the forces of extremism to turn back the clock.”

“We have to make sure we continue to defend our democracy, protect our right to vote, stand up for our fundamental freedoms, and most importantly make sure that no one touches your Social Security and medicate,” said Jeffries, who reiterated his mantra – “people over politics,” before thanking everyone for attending the event.

Senator Persaud thanked the Community Affairs officers for being the lead, and for working with the Council. “Together we can achieve more that’s what community is all about. Thanks to all of you for coming out to support, noting despite a postponement, the older folks braved the rainy weather, the politician called showers of blessings. “You are blessed abundantly, it’s great to see all of you,” she added.

“It’s always a pleasure to be among family,” said Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse, noting that the event was beautiful as usual, and credits the 69th Precinct Council, Clergy, and auxiliary for hosting the event.

“We need love more than ever in our lives right now, we are going through a challenging time, and whenever I have a chance to celebrate, I like to be present, we need to be together,” she said.

Dorothy Lee, in turn, extended greetings on behalf of Assemblymember Jamie Williams, while Gardy Brazela, chairperson of Community Board #18, called for more events like the Valentine’s Appreciation dinner to engage the community.

On behalf of the Council, Precinct, Community Affairs unit, we extend our warmest greetings and utmost respect to everyone, said PO Nicole Rostant.

“This event is dedicated to honoring and celebrating the invaluable contributions that you the older adults have made to our community. Your wisdom, experience, and unwavering support plays a role in the shaping of our community. For us it was important to not only recognize but to show our appreciation to you for all that you have done. Without your guidance and dedication, we would not have been able to achieve many of our goals nor learn as much as we have from your abundant knowledge and experiences.”

“As police officers we hold the utmost respect for every one of you. Your presence in our community serves as an inspiration to us all and we are tremendously grateful for all the positive impact you have made,” said the PO.

“We would like to express our undying support, and our appreciation for everything you do. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed and volunteered their time and services.

Thank you all for your hard work and unwavering support in making this event a success, she said while acknowledging the 69 Precinct Community Council, and donors, Tastee Bakery, Tasty Delicious, Richard’s Restaurant, Delish, Tropical Taste and Good Friends Restaurant, the Youth Explorers, and Detective Brown for singing the National Anthem, and serenading the senior, with Etta James’ hit – “At Last.”

Commanding Officer Captain Dion Hinds greeted the community, elected officials, and the clergy with enthusiasm, and acknowledged that despite the weather conditions weren’t the greatest, everyone looked shiny and bright.

“Welcome everyone to the second annual older adults Valentine’s Day dinner. This is my first time at the event,” he said, after which, he was seen on the dance floor with Senator Persaud.

The event that was blessed by Rev. Edward Kane, emceed by Police Officer Samuel Maria, and entertained by DJ Chinee Golden Touch.

Others in attendance were, Community Leaders Melba Brown, and Sue Ann Partnow, Auxiliary & Clergy, Faith E. Williams, PO Solomon, PO Meo, and Lt. Charles, among others.
