Windies crushed by 241 runs as England lifts Botham-Richards Trophy

West Indies surrendered the Richards-Botham Trophy with a demoralising 241-run defeat in the second Test at Trent Bridge.

West Indies, set an improbable 385 for victory, battling to 61 without loss at the end of the first hour with captain Kraigg Brathwaite on 47 and opening partner Mikyle Louis on 17 just before the drinks break.

However, when Louis chipped the first ball following the break from seamer Chris Woakes (2-28) and was caught at the wicket, West Indies lost ten wickets for 82 runs, stumbling to 142 all out causing them to lose the Test with a day to spare in the three-Test series with the score 2-0.

Twenty-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, in only his fifth Test, got a career-best five for 41, becoming the youngest-ever English bowler to take a five-wicket haul at home, with Gus Atkinson supporting with two for 49.

Resuming the fourth morning at 248 for three in their second innings, England was dismissed on the stroke of tea for 425. Former captain Joe Root scored 122 and Harry Brook contributed 109, the pair extending their fourth wicket stand to 189 before being separated.

Root, began the morning on 37 and reached 81 not out at lunch, before completing his 32nd Test hundred, facing 178 deliveries.

Brook, resumed on 71, faced 132 balls and struck 13 fours, before becoming the day’s first casualty, off Seales who was West Indies’ best bowler with four for 97.

Root then put on 30 for the seventh wicket with Woakes (12) and 41 for the eighth with Atkinson (21 not out)  before he was out, by Kirk McKenzie off medium pacer Jason Holder.

Seales finished off the innings quickly with the two final wickets as England lost their last three for just six runs.

Tasked with undertaking a challenging total, Brathwaite and Louis carefully crafted the foundations of the chase with a half-century opening stand.

Brathwaite belted eight fours in a 48-ball knock while Louis faced 40 balls, striking two boundaries.

Kirk McKenzie edged a cut at Bashir and was taken by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith for one and Brathwaite followed off Woakes, leaving the Caribbean side on 74 for three.

With one run added, first innings century-maker Kavem Hodge was lbw to Bashir on the fourth ball without scoring and left-hander Alick Athanaze was out on 1 edging low to Root off Bashir.

Kevin Sinclair was caught for one and West Indies stumbled further at 91 for six. Jason Holder’s counter-attacked with 37 off 42 balls belting four fours and two sixes, but the outcome was inevitable.
