WI Women qualify for 2022 World Cup
West Indies Women have advanced to next year’s World Cup in New Zealand, based on their current status in the ICC One-Day rankings.
They were scheduled to play Sri Lanka last week but the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled after a member of the Asian side’s support staff was tested tested positive for COVID-19.
With the tournament’s cancellation, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Pakistan will now advance to next year’s World Cup in New Zealand which will be played from March 4 to April 3 next year.
West Indies played one game of the nine-nation tournament, beating Ireland Women the week before by six wickets in Group A.
The team was in Zimbabwe to play one of the qualifiers, but the International Cricket Council abruptly canceled the 50-over tournament in response to a new strain of COVID-19 designated Omicron, which has been spreading in southern Africa.
CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams said the canceled fixture has also engaged the attention of CWI, while dialogue with organizers continued over the tournament’s future.
