Richards takes One Lap Title
Former 2022 World Indoor champion Jereem Richards captured his first national men’s 400m title on the second day of the National Gas Company (NGC) National Junior and Senior Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in Trinidad recently.
Richards crossed the line in 44.72, a new season best, improving on his previous 2024 best of 44.82.
US-born Jaden Marchan who clocked 46.30 was second, with Richards’ Abilene Wildcats club-mate Shakeem Mckay clocking 46.62 finishing third.
Veteran Renny Quow was fourth, clocking 46.65, with Elijah Joseph (47.54) in sixth.
Keshorn Walcott also set a personal best in taking the men’s javelin crown with a 85.22m throw. The 2012 Olympic champion improved on his year’s best of 84.89. He also recorded distances of 84.42 and 83.85.
Devin Augustine retained the men’s 100m dash honours in 10.21 ahead of Jonathan Farinah on 20.23 in second and Kion Benjamin on 10.38 third.
Teenager Sole Frederick sped to the women’s 200 metres title as she crossed the line in 23.02 seconds (wind 1.9 m/s), a new personal best for the 18-year-old Simplex sprinter.
Veteran Reyare Thomas (Abilene Wildcats) had to settle for second in 23.69 with Concorde’s Caliyah Wallace taking bronze (24.44).
Frederick, a multiple Carifta medallist, also dipped below the World Under-20 Championships qualifying standard of 24.35 seconds.
