Rabbi Shea Hect champions support for Israel

Rabbi Shea Hect, chairman of the Board of the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education, during an interview with Caribbean Life, spoke about the critical situation in Israel and the organization’s heartfelt efforts to provide support, comfort, and education during these challenging times.

At the forefront of their initiatives, Rabbi Hect highlighted the power of prayer as a meaningful act. “Our most profound and sincere act is to pray for the peace of Israel. It’s a collective prayer for the well-being of the people, a gesture that transcends borders and resonates deeply within the Jewish community one wants bloodshed, we want the hostages to come home to their families whether they are Jewish or not.”

The spiritual support, he believes, extends a comforting embrace to those directly affected by the ongoing events.

Speaking about the profound connection Jews feel to Israel, Rabbi Hect shared, “For many, the connection to Israel is deeply rooted in our biblical history…it was promised to us…you don’t need to physically visit Israel or be there to feel a deep connection because our ties are inherently biblical.”

Expressing the solidarity from families in New York, Rabbi Hect acknowledged the compassionate initiative of many who have taken it upon themselves to send aid to families displaced and broken in Israel. “A lot of families here in the U.S. are sending support to the families in Israel who are broken and displaced because of the conflict with Gaza.”

He noted that this is a testament to the strength of the global Jewish community.

Understanding the economic strain on Israel, Rabbi Hect emphasized the importance of educating people on the significance of buying products made in Israel and sold in the U.S. This strategic approach aims to support the Israeli economy and contribute to the nation’s recovery.

“The economy is hurting because many people who were working are unable to do so now, so many people from New York have gone to Israel to help businesses…when Israel is strong Jews around the world feel a sense of strength.”

Importantly, Rabbi Hect dispelled the notion that support for Israel is exclusive to the Jewish community. He emphasized that Israel is a diverse and international country, transcending religious and cultural boundaries. “Israel is not just a home for Jews; it’s a shared space for Christians, Muslims, and people of various faiths. Its international significance is evident in its holy sites and the coexistence of multiple religions.”

In the face of challenges, Rabbi Hect and the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education continue to exemplify resilience, compassion, and a commitment to fostering unity. Their multifaceted approach, encompassing prayer, tangible support, and economic empowerment, stands as a testament to the enduring strength of the global Jewish community and its dedication to the well-being of Israel.
