NYC Health+ Hospitals/Elmhurst announces new Executive Leadership appointments
NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst recently announced three new appointments to its Executive Leadership team: Dr. Hadeel Alkhairw as chief quality officer, Dr. Thaina Rousseau-Pierre as patient safety officer and chief equity officer, and Gail Young, DNP, RN, as deputy chief nursing officer.

“I am pleased to welcome Gail Young, an Elmhurst Nursing Department veteran, into her new role as deputy chief nursing officer,” said Joann Gull, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst’s Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Executive Director. “Gail will play a pivotal role in assisting the hospital to achieve magnet designation and will spearhead other key initiatives to enhance patient care.”
Dr. Alkhairw, whose role as chief quality officer will involve ensuring that the hospital delivers the high-quality care in an efficient, safe manner, will also monitor quality problems such as re-admissions and hospital-acquired conditions. She will also collect patient feedback that offers regarding care issues with the aim of reducing ineffective care. The primary care physician holds a master’s degree in Quality and Safety Management and advanced certifications in Healthcare Analytics, High Reliability, Physician Leadership, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She also serves as the clinical director of Elmhurst Hospital’s Safety Net Clinic and the Street Outreach and Wellness Program and is an assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and the President-Elect of the Society of General Internal Medicine Mid-Atlantic Region. Dr. Hadeel is an immigrant from Iraq; she received her medical degree from the Al-Mustansiriyah School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Flushing Hospital. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Thaina Rousseau-Pierre, who was born in Haiti, has a background as a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Health. As Patient Safety Officer and Chief Equity Officer, she will be working on initiatives to improve healthcare outcomes for all patients. This includes screening for social determinants of health and updating policies and practices to reduce health inequities, developing programs to encourage proactive safety measures, and promoting safety culture and a reduction in healthcare errors. Dr. Pierre is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed her internship and residency in Pediatrics at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, New Jersey. She holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research and has a Certification in Patient Safety from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
In her role as Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, Gail Young, DNP, NE-C, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, will oversee leadership responsibilities for all nursing functions, helping to establish patient care standards, and working to design ways to improve patient care. Ms. Young previously worked as a Registered Nurse in Elmhurst’s Emergency Department before moving on to become a House Nursing Supervisor and an Associate Director of Nursing for Ambulatory Care. She has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hunter College, a Master of Science in Nursing from Molloy College in Nursing Administration with Informatics, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing Systems Leadership from Chamberlain University.
