NOVA Frontier Film Festival returns for its fifth installment at Billy Holiday Theatre
Billy Gerard Frank, filmmaker and creator of NOVA Frontier Film Festival and Lab, in partnership with the Billy Holiday Theatre, has announced the return of its in-person film festival in celebration of its 5th installment presentations.
The gala opening on June 24, at 7 p.m., will continue with a showcase of films, until June 27 at the Billy Holiday Theatre, Fulton Street, Brooklyn, themed “Exile and Belonging.”
According to Frank, a Grenadian-born artist, this year’s selections of films spanning from narrative to short and feature-length, grapple with experiences of uprootedneness, deporting, returning, belonging, motherhood and home as a metaphor and extension of Mother Earth: Timely, political, reflective, and riveting.
He told Caribbean Life that the 2022 edition of the NFFF includes conversations, panel discussions, and performances, led by filmmakers, academics, activists and teeming minds in-tuned with the spirit and ethos of the festival.
He said on the precipice of celebration for both NOVA Frontier and Billie Alike, the spirit of forging ahead and anticipation a brighter future is exemplified by “our film making hailing from the global African diaspora, Latin America, and the Middle East.”
“They show us through their cameras, not only their compelling experiences and perspectives of the world, but also their boundless tenacity to frame meaningful and complex narratives, despite a global pandemic and compounding obstacles.”
Additionally, NFFF is excited to collaborate with the Bronx Documentary Center, a non-profit gallery and educational institute that will program a selection of films and a panel discussion, highlighting their works from the community.
Some of the films will include the work of Egyptian-Australian documentary filmmaker, Rendah Haj Curates, as part of a selection of short films in the “Her Lens” program, navigating motherhood and womanhood through the intimate experiences of four young African women.
Through the lens of queen African, Latin, and Musil filmmakers, “I Am Here” program, curated by Chilean artist and activities. Matias Alvi, will highlight politics, and will explores the complexity of emotions surrounding being queer and the search for love, belonging and identity in homophobic societies and offer an insight into resiliency and futurity.
