NJ Guyana Medical Mission to conduct outreaches from Oct 29 to Nov 3 across the Republic
The Guyana Medical Mission of US doctors whose purpose is to provide comprehensive clinical care and donate medical equipment and supplies to various villages in the South American Republic, will begin its operation at the Berbice High School & Fyrish Health Center on Sunday, Oct. 29.
The 501© (3) non-profit organization, registered in New Jersey, that also provide health education to improve the well-being of individuals in various communities, will conduct wellness checks, High Pretension check-ups, Blood Sugar Testing, Optometry and Ophthalmalgia, and Pediatric checkups.
The free heal care clinics will continue Oct. 30, at Rose Hall (St. Francis Community Center), & Belladrum 7th Day Adventist Church & Mahaicony Health Care Center, on Oct. 31.
Citizens in Mahaica and BV Health Care Center, will be served on Nov. 1, while Buxton Health Care Center, and East LaPenitence and Sophia Health Care Centers will be served Nov. 2 & 3 respectively.
All outreaches will begin at 8 a.m.
New Jersey-based Guyanese humanitarian, Lady Ira Lewis told Caribbean Life that her organization will be hosting the outreach program in Sophia and east LaPenitence, and is calling of families to take full advantage of the opportunity to receive a medical checkup. She noted that eye wear (glasses), and medical supplies will be available free to the public.
The group, founded by two physicians, Drs. James T. Cort and Berman O. Saunders (deceased), began its mission in 2005, and has grown tremendously with professionals including surgeons, physicians, nurses, and some who volunteer their time and efforts to assist the professionals in caring for the impoverished.
The organization has a strong surgical team in general, gynecology, urology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics, in addition to providing ophthalmology and optometry services.
The team also includes experienced pharmacists, nurses, administrators, and other volunteers who are always ready to serve from 8 a.m. until the last patient is seen.
In 2017, the organization served a total of 2,424 patients at seven locations. Some 69 surgeries (general, gynecology, orthopedics and vascular) and 27 gastroenterology procedures were conducted at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital and Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Additionally, 1,082 patients had eye examinations, 1,098 lab exams, which included EKG, Cholesterol, Creatinine, Blood Sugar, and Hemoglobin were done.
In 2018, more than 72 surgeries were conducted at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, which included patients who were transported from the West Demerara Hospital. These included hernia repairs, colon resections, thyroidectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, hysterectomies, and caesarian deliveries.
The organization will continue its fund-raising activities to serve the people of Guyana.
