National Medical Association names Jamaican as president
After practicing medicine for over 21 years, Dr. Garfield A. D. Clunie is now the 123rd president of the National Medical Association, (NMA) the oldest and largest organization of African American physicians. The Jamaican-born physician was recently appointed as the new president and comes to this position with an extensive legacy in the areas of maternal-fetal medicine, obstetrics, and gynecology (specializing in woman’s reproductive tract, pregnancy, and childbirth). Dr. Clunie has served with the NMA for more than 15 years as a leading expert in women’s health.
In addition to caring for pregnant women with complex medical conditions, Dr. Clunie’s special interests include prenatal diagnosis of fetal anatomic and genetic abnormalities and perception and interconception care, diabetes in pregnancy and fetal abnormalities. Dr. Clunie has built his career on serving vulnerable populations and is an advocate for the elimination of health disparities and he seeks health equity for all. “It is an honor to be in a position to help shape policies and to work towards eliminating disparities in diseases that affect our communities,” Dr. Clunie said.
Dr. Clunie is active in numerous organizations including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Society for Fetal-Medicine, The Maternal Alcohol for Abuse Task Force, The Global Health Committee, President of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) which include the states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and the Caribbean. The SNMA is the nation’s oldest and largest association of minority medical students. He is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Action Network, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black culture, the Global Jamaican Diaspora Council, Jamaican Diaspora Northeast Health Sector, and the Jamaican Diaspora Health Taskforce Action Network.
He works at Mount Sinai Health System supervising Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) fellows, OB/GYN residents and medical students at the outpatient high-risk pregnancy clinic and ultrasound at Mount Sinai. He is also Site Director at the Union Square, Downtown Manhattan location of Mount Sinai Health, overseeing maternal-fetal medicine.
In September, Dr. Clunie will be joining the faculty at New York University Langone Health where he will be associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and inaugural vice chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the department.
