Mia Mottley scores influential of the year title

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley is living proof that influence is not defined by social media or popular opinion. Some might say her ‘time has come.’

Named on the 19th annual list of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people on the planet, the first female leader of the Caribbean nation staked claim to an enviable position spot on the coveted list on May 23.

Her full length image also appeared on one of the five limited edition covers issued by the publication.

A champion of climate change, PM Mottley was listed with 49 women, athletes, entertainers, and presidents of Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

“Our hope is that the Time100 list is not simply a recognition of influence but a study in how influence can be wielded,” Edward Felsenthal, CEO and editor in chief of Time Magazine said.

While some might believe, the leader stepped onto the world stage when she addressed delegates at the opening of the General Assembly at the Union Nations; or when she rebuked a COP26 assembly at the Glasgow, Scotland conference about ignoring a deadline to saving the planet, nationals on the island were convinced of her political savvy when at a young age she advocated for reforms on the island.

Ultimately, she led the Barbados Labor Party to two historic, consecutive 30-0 victories.

Last year she successfully spearheaded Republican status for her country.
