Jamaican reggae artist Minna LaFortune drops ‘Global Warming’
Jamaican reggae artist Minna LaFortune has released her robust new single, “Global Warming,” a stirring anthem inspired by recent natural disasters, including devastating storms, wildfires, and extreme temperatures.
LaFortune, a Brooklyn resident, said on Tuesday that these events have “greatly impacted” her home state of New York and surrounding areas.
She said “Global Warming” addresses the escalating climate crisis, urging listeners to heed the warnings and take immediate action to protect the planet.
LaFortune told Caribbean Life that she was “particularly moved” by the recent hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton, which ravaged the Caribbean and southern states of the US.
She said the aftermath of Hurricane Milton “hit especially close to home” when it totaled her cousin’s house in Orlando, FL.
“Along with the wildfires in California and Canada that drastically impacted air quality in New York City, and the record triple-digit temperatures this summer, these events serve as both the backdrop and inspiration for ‘Global Warming,’” LaFortune said.
LaFortune delivers a heartfelt plea for global awareness and unity in the face of these climate disasters through the song’s hard-hitting lyrics and infectious reggae rhythms.
In addition to the personal impacts she has witnessed, LaFortune points to more significant trends that underscore the urgency of the climate crisis.
“Global warming has created severe climate risks across the US, forcing people to rethink where they live and where they should buy a home, something that wasn’t a significant concern 30 years ago,” she said, pointing to a recent report on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt in which reporter Hallie Jackson highlighted this growing issue, stating, “More than 90 % of the counties in the US have had one disaster claim filed, and over the next 30 years, some experts predict that 7.5 million Americans could move because of climate risks.”
“Global Warming” lyrics include: “We have to change our ways in time/we must not ignore the signs/look at the storms, look at the sea they are a threat to humanity.”
LaFortune said the song emphasizes the increasingly frequent natural disasters—including rising sea levels, floods, wildfires, record heatwaves, and powerful storms—while calling for immediate collective action to combat the climate crisis.
She said her connection to these events, particularly the extreme heat, storms, and wildfires that affected New York’s air quality, “shines through” in the intensity and passion of her performance.
In the song’s dynamic rap section, Minna brings a fresh voice to the conversation: “Yo, yo, yo, listen up/I got something to say about the planet that we live on every day/It’s in danger, it’s in trouble, it’s in pain/, and we are the ones who are to blame.”
