Jamaica and Liberia establish diplomatic ties

The Republic of Liberia and Jamaica formally established diplomatic ties. This came in conjunction with the recent 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, where the signing ceremony took place at its headquarters, in New York City.

Signing on behalf of their respective governments were Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr., Minister of Foreign Affair for Liberia and Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith.

The historic start to this diplomatic tie between Jamaica and Liberia is in keeping with the foreign policy goals of the Jamaican government to deepen engagement with the African continent and to identify opportunities for enhancing trade and investment. In addition, there will be cultural exchange, technical opportunities, and people-to-people transactions all areas the government intend to enhance in this official agreement. “I am pleased that the day has come when we finally formalize diplomatic relations with Africa’s first republic. Significant informal connections already exist, but now the possibilities for cooperation between our two countries are endless,” Johnson Smith stated.

Minister Johnson Smith further stated that the historic bond will be strengthened, “as we work together at the bilateral and multilateral levels to attain sustainable development.” Both Minister Johnson Smith and Minister Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah acknowledged that the Ambassador of Liberia, Clar Marie Weah, is Jamaican and the First Lady of Liberia.

The ministers stated their intentions to use the appropriate diplomatic channels to guarantee that these newly formed channels become operational quickly.
