Haitian artist Michel Chataigne showcases 40 years of cultural influence in Brooklyn

For over four decades, Michel Chataigne has been a pioneer in the world of fashion, hair, and makeup, and now, New Yorkers will get a chance to experience his groundbreaking work up close. As part of the Haiti X New York (HXNY) residency program, Chataigne will be showcased in a special exhibition in Brooklyn from March 16 to April 13, 2025. The event will celebrate the Haitian artist’s incredible 40-year career, offering an immersive look into his contributions to fashion and culture.
This exciting exhibition will be hosted by Haiti Cultural Exchange (HCX), a nonprofit organization established to develop, present, and promote the cultural expressions of the Haitian people. This representation will highlight Chataigne’s distinctive designs, which have helped shape Haitian fashion and beauty on a global scale.
It will start with haute couture and carnival costumes, and the show will reflect the resilience and creativity that define Haitian culture.

Haiti Cultural Exchange, which has been committed to promoting Haitian arts for 16 years, is proud to bring Chataigne’s art to the U.S. “Michel’s work is a testament to his mastery of his craft and his deep love for Haiti,” said Regine Roumain, HCX’s Executive Director. “This exhibition is an opportunity to experience his vision firsthand and understand how he has used fashion as a powerful cultural expression.”

The opening reception is on March 16, 2025, and guests can enjoy a first look at the exhibition.
A workshop on Haitian craftsmanship will be held on March 29, where Chataigne will discuss the techniques and traditions that influence his designs.
A fashion show and intimate talk on April 11, moderated by Haitian fashion designer Garvenchy Nicolas, offer deeper insights into Chataigne’s creative process.
Chataigne’s career began in 1984, and since then, he has become a key figure in Haiti’s fashion scene. He has designed clothes for the runway and has also contributed significantly to the beauty industry through his renowned hair salon in Haiti. His leadership in organizing Haiti Fashion Week in 2013 solidified his reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most influential creative forces.
“My work is a reflection of the beauty and strength of my people,” Chataigne shared. “Through fashion, I have found a way to speak to the world about Haiti’s culture and its potential.”
This exhibition is not just a celebration of one man’s artistic journey — it is a window into the vibrant, often overlooked world of Haitian culture that continues to influence the global stage.
