Guyana, Montserrat draw in League B finale
CONCACAF said on Wednesday that Guyana and Montserrat faced off in a scoreless draw to conclude play in Group C of League B in the 2022–23 CONCACAF Nations League (CNL) at the Wildey Turf Stadium in Wildey, Barbados.
“Guyana was locked into the second place heading into this encounter, but were searching for a fourth victory to put together its best CNL campaign yet,” CONCACAF said. “Montserrat was searching for its second victory of the tournament to finish third in the group.”
The home side was on the offensive early and almost had an early goal in the 2’, but Kelsey Benjamin was well covered by the Montserrat defense, CONCACAF said.
It said Elliot Bonds tried his luck with a shot from distance but was just off the mark in the 6’ minute.
“The visitors tried to break through just seconds later, as Jamie Allen could not break through the wall of defenders,” CONCACAF said. “Allen did earn a free kick, but the attempt in the 7’ from Brandon Barzey was off the mark.”
It said Guyana continued to push forward with one of their better build ups in the 22’, only to see Leo Lovell blocked by defender Jernade Meade.
CONCACAF said Benjamin looked to have gotten the better of the Emerald Boys’ backline, but his attempt in the 67’ was intercepted by goalkeeper Corrin Brooks.
Emery Welshman looked to be the hero off the bench but was denied in stoppage time as the match ended in a stalemate, CONCACAF said.
It said goalkeepers Kai McKenzie-Lyle and Corrin Brooks capped off their individual campaigns with clean sheets. Brooks ended the night with two saves.
CONCACAF said both teams will return to League B in the next CNL. In the meantime, Guyana awaits to find out who it will face in the Gold Cup Prelims.
