From Berbice to Georgia: Kimbesha Campbell’s journey to bring Guyanese cuisine to the South

Kimbesha Campbell, a proud Guyanese immigrant, has brought the vibrant flavors of her homeland to Georgia through her food truck business, Kim’s Caribbean Kitchen. Specializing in authentic Guyanese dishes, Campbell’s food truck has quickly gained popularity, delighting locals with a taste of the Caribbean like no other.

Originally from Berbice, she moved to the United States with her children, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start with her husband. As she settled into life in Georgia, she found comfort in sharing her love for cooking with family and friends. It wasn’t long before those closest to her began encouraging her to turn her passion into a business.

“I love cooking and just enjoy it and every time I would host family and friends, they would rave about my cooking,” Campbell said. “They told me I should do this professionally. So, I decided to take the leap and turn my passion into a reality.”

It was in 2017 that she started her catering business from home and then in 2020, she launched Kim’s Caribbean Kitchen, a food truck that serves authentic Guyanese dishes such as pepperpot, roti, curry goat, and fried fish. What started as a small operation has since grown, attracting a loyal customer base across Georgia.

“We do catering and people can book us for any event, we will bring the food truck and everything they need and make it a great experience and provide you with some of the best Guyanese food and no event is too big or small for us,” she shared.

Campbell expressed her pride in sharing a piece of Guyana with her new community in Georgia. “It’s been such a rewarding experience to see how people respond to the flavors and culture of Guyana. Every time someone tries our food, their reaction is priceless. They love it because there aren’t a lot of Guyanese food places in the area and so I always have to explain some of our dishes to people and I love doing it,” she said.

Kim’s Caribbean Kitchen has quickly become a standout in the food scene, providing a unique experience for Georgians eager to explore new cuisines. Campbell’s food truck can often be found at local events, festivals, and pop-ups, with a growing following of loyal customers who return time and time for a taste of the Caribbean.

She also has a green seasoning line that is authentic Guyanese flavors and she ships anywhere nationwide. “When people eat my meat they always ask me what kind of seasoning I use and so that inspired me to start this very small with samples among family and friends and a bottle starting from $5.”

Her next move is to own an “authentic Guyanese restaurant in Atlanta and push the Guyanese cuisine more and everyone is always asking where is the restaurant located so it’s coming soon…I’m so happy to bring a little bit of Guyana to Georgia,” she said. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
