Flatbush Caton Market partners for Haitian mortar & pestle

Uncommon Goods and Flatbush Caton Market have announced a partnership to bring the market’s Caribbean goods, beginning with its Haitian mortar & pestle to the Uncommon Goods’ e-commerce site.

“This partnership of two Brooklyn-based entities symbolizes the importance of supporting local immigrants and microentrepreneurs as well as a milestone of growth for Flatbush Caton Market vendors,” said Lisa Thompson, director at Flatbush Caton Market.

“Having the ability to sell a product on Uncommon Goods’ e-commerce platform will allow our vendors to reach a national audience and share a piece of Haitian culture with a diverse array of shoppers,” she added.

The traditional handmade Haitian mortar & pestle (pilon) is handcrafted in Haiti alongside the Flatbush Caton Market vendors Marie George, Ernst Charmant, Rezile Alcius and Primate Garconnet, who import the product to Uncommon Goods in preparation for distribution.

“The Haitian wooden mortar & pestle is now live on the Uncommon Goods’ website and ready for purchase, making a great gift as the holiday season is quickly approaching,” Thompson said.

Flatbush Caton Market is a Caribbean-themed market in Flatbush, Brooklyn, established in 2000 to provide an indoor home to more than 40 independent vendors offering a range of Caribbean products and services.

The market is currently operating out of a temporary space on Clarendon Road, while the old market is undergoing a transformation and expansion.

Uncommon Goods is a place to discover hand-picked, creative designs by independent artists and makers.

Founded in 1999, Uncommon Goods has been a certified B Corporation since 2007.
