Brooklyn Boro Prez, Council Member Alexa Avilés gift 400 toys to P.S. 1 elementary pupils

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Council Member Alexa Avilés, recently teamed up with the National Supermarket Association to bring the ‘Three Kings Day’ celebration to 400 first, second, and third graders at P.S. 1 ‘The Bergen’ in Sunset Park. After opening remarks from P.S. 1 Principal Wanda Lopez-Ramirez and a performance of “Oh Moon” by the elementary school’s choir, Borough President Reynoso, Council Member Avilés, and National Supermarket Association Board Member Ivan Bueno shared the significance of ‘Three Kings Day,’ celebrating cultural traditions, and giving back to their communities. Elementary pupils in first, second, and third grade at the school received a gift, ranging from Easy-Bake Ovens to soccer balls, action figures, and game sets such as Checkers.

“’Día de Los Reyes’ isn’t just about toys and presents, it’s about the traditions that have crossed borders and passed through generations,” said Brooklyn Borough President Reynoso. “This is a holiday that is near and dear to our Latino communities, so it was such an honor to bring that joy and cheer to the kids at P.S. 1, whose families have come from all over to build a new home here in our borough. I’m so grateful that we could come together with Council Member Alexa Avilés, the National Supermarket Association, and P.S. 1 to spread love the Brooklyn way.”

“It brings me such joy to celebrate el día de los reyes magos in community,” said Council Member Avilés.”I was proud to come together with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, P.S. 1 and the National Supermarket Association to make this year’s festivities even more special. As the Borough President says, this holiday is about more than just toys. It is a story of struggle, migration and finding safety in unexpected places. For many New Yorkers, our city is not their first home, and that’s why it’s so important we welcome our neighbors, address their needs and support them with open arms.”

“We at P.S. 1 are very grateful to our Borough President, our City Council, and the National Supermarket Association for their visit and truly sharing in the spirit ‘Dias de Los Reyes,’” said P.S. 1 Principal Wanda Lopez-Ramirez. “As a Sunset Park leader, who was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Sunset Park, we are proud to celebrate and explore Latin traditions with our entire school community.”

“NSACares is designed to partner with charitable organizations in the different communities served by our members,” said the National Supermarket Association’s Board of Directors. “As established by our founders, the National Supermarket Association (NSA) has a longstanding tradition of giving back to the community. Through the promise of NSACares, each year, we will reaffirm our commitment to strengthening our corporate social responsibility with the many communities served by our members.”
