Beckford receives AOC ‘Courage to Change PAC’ endorsement
City Council Candidate Anthony Beckford said on Wednesday that he’s received the major endorsement of Progressive Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) and her organization, “Courage to Change PAC.”
Beckford, the son of Jamaican immigrants, is contesting the 45th Council District, currently represented by Haitian American Council Member Farah N. Louis.
The district comprises the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Kensington and Flatlands.
Beckford, a community activist and US Marine Corps veteran, said AOC created the PAC to help support progressive candidates, “who have shown great leadership in the community and are aligned with the progressive values needed to truly represent their communities.”
“It is truly an honor to receive this endorsement from AOC’s ‘Courage to Change PAC,’” Beckford said. “The work that I do for the community has always been consistent and selfless.
“As the next City Council Member of the 45th District, I am ready to introduce much-needed legislation, like my ‘Housing Justice Plan’ within my first 60 days in office to bring true affordable housing to the community and to the rest of New York City,” he added.
Beckford said his “Housing Justice Plan”, will provide rent rollbacks for tenants, property tax rollbacks for homeowners “and so much more to create truly affordable low to moderate income housing.”
He said he also plans to release his “Recovery Plan” for District 45, “which will revive the small businesses in the community, create more jobs, bring back trade schools and introduce my ‘Save Our Youth Initiative’ to end gun violence in our community.
“It is time for a change, and that time is now,” said Beckford, stating that he has received over 45 endorsements.
They include: New York Communities for Change, NYPAN, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, lawyer Zephyr Teachout, community leader Yvette Barrow, Tenants PAC, Grassroots Law PAC, Haitian Advocates for Peace and Caribbean Unity Alliance.
