Caribbean Carnival for Kids at Brooklyn Children’s Museum on Saturday, Aug. 8
On Saturday, Aug. 8, Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) is inviting families to “Celebrate the Caribbean,” an annual festival presented in partnership with the Brooklyn-based West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).
BCM said the “fun-filled, family-friendly event” features Caribbean musical performances, art-making, food, dance, and more, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“’Celebrate the Caribbean’ offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the rich diversity of the Caribbean Diaspora and enjoy a wide array of performers and vendors,” it said.
Steps away from Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean neighborhood, BCM said the kid-centric festival will celebrate the local community’s heritage with activities, including a Carnival headdress workshop, steel drum performance, dancers, moko jumbies (stilt walkers), and more.
BCM said “Celebrate the Caribbean” programming includes: A carnival headdress and bracelet workshop in BCM’s ColorLab Art Studio with WIADCA, the West Indian American Day Carnival Association; an introduction to the history and the basics of playing the steel pan drum with Harmony Music Makers; and a fun Afro-Caribbean dance performance with CarNYval Dancers.
Other events are: A Caribbean martial art workshop introducing Kalinda, which combines music, movement, storytelling, rhythm studies, oral tradition, and collaborative participation, presented by Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival and Something Positive; A story time session with Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival that teaches families about the origins of steelpan in celebration of World Steelpan Day; and Youth Dancers and Moko Jumbies (stilt walkers) in colorful costumes who will lead a dance performance featuring the rhythms of the Caribbean with the award-winning Sesame Flyers Youth Company.
BCM said a procession to the rooftop dance party, among others, will augment the carnival.
“Feel the rhythm of carnival culture with steel drums, stilt walkers, and costumed dancers at this island family fête,” it said.
