Brooklyn resident spreads kindness through hospitality
Andrew Albert Terrance Lockhart, the oldest of four children, was born on the island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.
Lockhart’s father, Randolph, is a pastor and religious scholar, while his mother, Gloria, is an educator. He considers them the most significant influences on him.
He said his parents were always happy to share and help anyone in need growing up. “My mother always said, ‘Never deny anyone food or a place to rest their head, ’” he stated. This is a statement he lives by as well.
Lockhart lived on the island until the late 1980s, when he moved to the United States to attend college in Miami, Florida, where he did his undergraduate degree.
In the early 1990s, he moved to Orlando, Florida, where he participated in the emerging underground electronic music scene. In 1999, he moved to New York City, where he lived for more than two decades.
Among his acts of kindness, Lockhart prepares and serve a massive meal monthly to feed neighbors and friends.
In addition, he has been hosting an annual “Friendsgiving” Event during Thanksgiving in NYC for about 20 years now, where people can get some good food and make new friends.
“It started a couple of years after I moved to NYC and realized that there are a lot of folks here in NYC who have no family here, so I wanted to create a space for folks to come and enjoy some good food, friends, and fun,” he said.
His hobbies when he was younger included reading, swimming, singing, and playing instruments. Now, his hobbies include cooking, traveling, and swimming, which he recently started doing again.
Lockhart is unsure about his legacy, but he said he would like people to be more tolerant of each other and try to live lives that are more accepting of our fellow human beings.
