Narcisse hosts successful Back to School Health Fair, Backpack Giveaway

Brooklyn Council Member Mercedes Narcisse says she hosted a very successful Back to School Health Fair and Backpack Giveaway on Saturday at the South Shore High School Field in Canarsie, Brooklyn.
โ€œThe event saw a fantastic turnout from local families and community members, with the day filled with activities, health services, and support for students returning to school,โ€ Narcisse, the Haitian-born representative for the 46th Council District in Brooklyn, told Caribbean Life.

โ€œThe weather started off cloudy, but the sun eventually came out, creating the perfect environment for a day of fun, health screenings, music, games, giveaways, and community-building,โ€ she added.
Narcisse said attendees participated in mental health resource sessions and enjoyed Zumba, food, and entertainment.
She said one of the main highlights was the distribution of backpacks filled with school supplies to help students start the year off right.

โ€œIt was incredible to witness our community come together today,โ€ said Council Member Narcisse. โ€œThe energy was fantastic, and Iโ€™m deeply grateful to all the attendees, volunteers, supporters, and my staff who made this day possible.
โ€œI want to give a special shout-out to Millennium Development for their partnership,โ€ she added. โ€œTogether, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more prepared community.โ€
Narcisse said the organizers distributed more than 500 backpacks with school supplies to students returning to the classroom, and vendors also provided access to vital health resources.

She said over two dozen organizations, such as the Brooklyn Canarsie Lions Club, NYC Health, One Brooklyn Health, Haitian Nurses Network, SUNY Downstate, NYC Emergency Management, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), provided services at the annual fair.
โ€œWith health screenings and mental health tips available throughout the day, the fair reinforced the importance of health and wellness in student success,โ€ said Narcisse, a registered nurse by training.
