From Guyana to the international skies: Anthony Greene’s journey to becoming a pilot 

“My name is Anthony Greene, and I’m 29 years old.” This simple introduction opens a window into a remarkable story of resilience, adaptability, and soaring ambition. A proud Guyanese immigrant, Greene navigated a challenging transition to the United States in September 2011. His journey from the bustling streets of Brooklyn to the cockpit of a major airline – United Airlines, is a testament to the power of determination and seizing unexpected opportunities.

Adapting to a New Life

Moving from Guyana to New York was challenging for a young Greene. The unfamiliar Guyanese accent and a school system that only partially recognized his previous education led to setbacks. Despite these hurdles, Greene remained resilient and focused on his goals. “It was a little bit difficult because, as most would know, the Guyanese accent, most people in America don’t understand when we talk,” he recalled. Despite these hurdles, Greene’s perseverance shone through, and he graduated from high school in 2013.

A Chance Encounter at Jamba Juice

After high school, Greene’s aspirations wavered between becoming a surgeon or a lawyer. But fate had other plans. While working at Jamba Juice, a pilot from Delta Airlines walked in. Intrigued by the pilot’s sharp appearance and enticing work schedule — only 11 days a month with international flights — Greene’s curiosity was piqued. A quick Google search and a bold request for the pilot’s business card set him on a new trajectory. The following week, Greene took a discovery flight at an airport in Long Island, and his passion for flying took off.

Turning Dreams into Reality

With newfound determination, Greene enrolled in flight school at 18 and completed his training within a year, obtaining various licenses essential for becoming a commercial pilot. “From the time I enrolled into flight school, it took me about a year to get all my ratings,” he explained. Alongside flight training, he pursued a degree in Business Management, ensuring he had a robust educational foundation.

Flying High

Today, Greene has been a pilot for nearly a decade. Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “I am happy that when I go home, I am something — something that people there can look up to and look to as a role model.” His gratitude extends to his father and stepmother, whose unwavering support was instrumental in his success. Greene’s story is a beacon of hope, especially for young immigrants and underrepresented communities.

Giving Back and Moving Forward

Despite his achievements, Greeney remains grounded and committed to giving back. His advice to young people echoes his journey. “Don’t always stick to the careers people tell you we must be… Sometimes it’s better to go get a trade; sometimes it’s better to sit down and figure out what you want to be,” Greene advised. He mentors young kids in the DMV area and anyone looking to find their way.

For Anthony Greene, the sky is not the limit; it’s just the beginning. His story is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and a bit of luck, dreams can indeed take flight.
