Haiti’s Violette AC wins 2022 FCCCC, claims SCCL berth

CONCACAF said on Tuesday that Violette AC of Haiti is the champion of the 2022 Flow CONCACAF Caribbean Club Championship after defeating Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic, 4-3, in a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw in Sunday’s Final.

With the victory, CONCACAF said Violette has qualified for the 2023 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (CCL), which will be the club’s first appearance in the tournament.

“The 2023 SCCL will mark Violette’s first ever adventure in the SCCL after topping Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic to claim the 2022 FCCCC,” said CONCACAF in a statement.

“A winner of the 1984 CONCACAF Champions Cup, Violette is the sixth different Haitian side to have qualified during the SCCL era,” it added.

Thus far, five clubs in total have qualified for the 2023 edition of the tournament, CONCACAF said.

It said next year’s competitions will be the last under the current 16 team knockout format.

Starting in 2024, CONCACAF said the CCL will expand to include an additional round and 27 clubs. More information is available here.

CONCACAF also said that Mexico’s Club Leon are back in the SCCL for a fourth straight year and fifth overall after finishing as runners-up in the 2021 Liga MX Apertura.

“Club Leon achieved their best SCCL finish in 2021 when they reached the quarterfinals,” CONCACAF said.

It also said the Guadalajara-based club, Atlas, will make its CONCACAF debut after winning the 2021 Liga MX Apertura. Atlas is the 15th different Mexican club to have qualified for the SCCL.

Additionally, CONCACAF said five-time CONCACAF champions and two-time SCCL winners Pachuca are back in the tournament for the first time since their title-winning run in 2016-16.

The Tuzos reached the 2023 edition by virtue of being a finalist in the 2022 Liga MX Clausura, CONCACAF said.

Tigres UANL, the 2020 SCCL champions are back for a seventh time in the SCCL as the non-finalist of the 2022 Liga MX Clausura with the most accumulated points during the Clausura season, CONCACAF said.
