Third World Band to perform in New York City
One of the world’s longest-lived reggae band, the legendary Third World, will be performing at Sony Hall in New York City come Nov. 12, 2022. The world-renowned musical band, one of Jamaica’s most consistently popular group of performers, having crossover acts among international audiences and mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, and rock and now dancehall, will play for the need of children. Diana Pollard, president of the Issa Foundation, who is spearheading the event made the announcement recently. According to Pollard “the group was the perfect choice.” Third World’s style has been described as reggae fusion. “This will be an amazing evening,” Pollard stated.
The amazing evening will be a children charity gala to help raise funds to build a well needed health care facility in the Richmond Estates, St. Ann. The $200,000 the foundation is expecting to raise from this gala will fill a critical health care gap in the parishes of St. Ann and St. Mary, “we are thankful and humbled that Third World band agreed to be the foundation’s reggae ambassador.” Pollard stated during the announcement. Establishing this health facility for the children and adolescents will be in an atmosphere that engages both parents and families in multifaceted holistic services that address physical, mental, and social support needs. In addition, the facility will also offer preventative and curative pediatric and adolescent care. Children and adolescents from other areas of the island will also benefit from the services provided by the facility. In explaining further, Pollard said the center will make provision for free eye exams, make the glasses at the clinic, and provide the glasses at no cost, she added. Pollard noted also that there was a dire need for a medical facility for the residents in the Richmond Estates area.
Other aspects of the facility’s program will be a rotation program for United States doctors to partner with local Jamaican doctors. Pollard is appealing to the public to support the cause, “Anyone who cares for the future generation should partner and support this very important initiative.” Pollard noted that there should be a right to health for children. “They can grow into healthy adults and in this way, contribute to the development of dynamic and productive societies,” she said.
In 2005 Couples Resorts established the Issa Trust Foundation as a non-profit organization. The mission of the foundation is to provide a system of prevention in health promotion, education, and community health improvement for the well-being of the local community. It is hoped that the facility will make a positive impact on the young people in Jamaica in many positive ways. The efforts from the members of the foundation are to always provide the children with a healthy mind and body to enable them to reach their goals, Pollard explained.
Third World Band was formed in 1973 and is a nine-time Grammy nominated band and is known for having several musical hits including, “Now That We Found Love,” “96 Degrees in The Shades,” “Try Jah Love” and “Roots with Quality.”
